FAQ – Your Pet and Artificial Grass

By Blog

Artificial grass is a low maintenance, pet friendly solution to a lush, green garden that can withstand wind, rain, snow, and Rex!  Here are the most commonly asked questions our customers with pets ask us about our artificial grass – and their answers of course!

Q: Is artificial grass safe for my pet?

A: Absolutely! Our artificial grass is made from a combination of nylon, polyethylene and polypropylene, which is pet (and child!) friendly. With no need for fertiliser or harmful weed killer, you can rest assured that your pet is safe in your garden.

Q: Can my pet damage the grass?

A: We design our artificial grass to be highly durable, so it can cope with even the most energetic of animals. What’s more, pets are less likely to dig up or kick at artificial grass as there is no soil underneath for them to get at. This means that you will have a pristine lawn all year round.

Q: Will pet faeces and urine stain my artificial grass?

A: Many of our customers come to us looking for artificial grass as their pets have ruined their natural lawn. One fantastic aspect of grass is that urine and faeces do not kill the lawn off, or leave stains, even after prolonged exposure.

Q: Will my pet hate artificial grass?

A: Definitely not! Our artificial grass is comfortable and springy – the perfect area for your pet to play and relax! In our experience, animals love our artificial grass and soon find a comfortable spot to call their own.

Q: How do I care for my artificial lawn?

A: One of the many advantages of artificial lawns is that they are low maintenance. They do not need mowing, feeding, or much weeding, which leaves you free to enjoy your garden instead.

We know that pets can be messy, but artificial lawns make cleaning up after your pet much easier. Urine drains through the perforations in the lawn rather than pooling at the top, so no mopping up after they’ve been to the toilet, and the short pile height makes picking faeces up clean and easy. The only maintenance we recommend is hosing down areas your pet may favour to prevent any unpleasant smells from building up. We also recommend picking up faeces as soon as possible to avoid them getting trodden into the lawn.

Q: Which artificial turf is most suitable for my pet?

A: The short answer to this question is: all of them! No matter your budget, you can find a lawn that is pet friendly at New Lawn. Check out our different ranges of artificial grass that we supply and install here.

Q: I’m ready to get an artificial lawn installed in my garden. What do I do next?

A: If you’re ready to go ahead, have any more questions, or would like a free sample of our grass, then get in touch today. We love chatting to our customers, so we aim to get back to you within 24 hours of your enquiry.

Artificial Grass For Dogs

By Blog

If you’re a dog owner, you may have reservations about getting an artificial lawn. We get it, your dog is a member of your family and they most likely enjoy the garden just as much as you (if not more). We want to share with you four reasons why our dog-owning customers love their New lawn. Read on!

It’s Easy to Clean

Even the most regularly walked dog will use the garden as a toilet at some point. Artificial lawns are well equipped to handle animal urine and faeces and, with regular cleaning, you won’t see any ill effects upon your lawn.

Dog urine can cause natural grass to die or turn yellow. This is not the case with artificial grass as liquid simply drains through the perforated holes. All that we recommend is that you clean your lawn regularly either with your garden hose, a bucket of warm, soapy water,  or by applying a mixture of water and vinegar. This will wash away any bacteria and  neutralise odours that may build up – particularly if your pooch has a favourite spot for doing his business!

Fun All Year Round

Do you dread letting your dog into  the garden after rain? Dog Friendly Artificial Grass

We know there’s nothing worse than muddy paw prints tracked through your house, but with Newlawn artificial grass, this will never be a problem again.

Dogs are far less likely to dig up artificial grass because there isn’t any treasure underneath for them to try and reach. Come rain or snow, water simply drains away instead of pooling on the surface meaning no muddy puddles (or paws!). With an artificial lawn, your dog can roam free and all that is needed is a quick dry before they come back into the house.

It’s Safer

As a dog owner, you probably already know that natural lawns can carry all sorts of dangers for your pet.

Artificial grass can greatly reduce the risk of your dog contracting lungworm, a disease brought about by consuming an infected worm or slug. This is more likely to happen on natural lawns, where these insects make their home. Another great bonus is that artificial grass does not require fertilisers or any other additional chemicals that could be harmful to dogs. So you can relax while your dog enjoys the garden, safe in the knowledge that they will remain healthy and happy.

Dog-Friendly Zone

Our customers dogs love their new lawns. We use only the best quality across all of Our Ranges, which means your dog won’t even notice the difference. The grass is both soft and bouncy, ideal for relaxation and boisterous play.  What’s more, your dog won’t be able to kick up chunks of turf or bury anything underneath the lawn. Instead, you can enjoy a perfect, lush green lawn throughout the year, even with the most mischievous of pups!

Top Reasons To Pick Artificial Grass

By Blog

Now, more than ever, we are becoming increasingly concerned about ways in which we can improve our health and wellbeing – not to mention our impact on the environment. It is no secret that enjoying the great outdoors is beneficial for both our mental and physical health, but have you considered how an artificial lawn can improve your wellbeing?

Go Green!

Lots of recent studies have shown that spending time in green spaces make us happier. The beauty of an artificial lawn is that it provides a green space that you can enjoy all year round. No matter the season, an artificial lawn is always green and inviting. It does not get muddy when it rains, nor does it become dry and uncomfortable in drier periods. That means you can reap the health benefits of having a lush, green space to relax in and recuperate whatever the season. What more of an incentive do you need to get outside and enjoy the fresh air?

Save The Planet!

Natural lawns often require an application of fertiliser or other chemicals to stay healthy. These can be harmful to humans, animals and the environment. However, with an artificial lawn, this is never the case. Most spills, stains or debris can be cleaned away with an application of hot, soapy water or a quick once over with the garden hose. This is much more environmentally friendly and minimises the amount of harmful chemicals that drain through lawns into the water supply, potentially damaging wildlife and polluting the environment.

What’s more, as you do not need to use any specialised tools on your Newlawn (just water and a stiff brush) you can get rid of any petrol-powered tools, such as your lawn-mower or strimmer, which will reduce your carbon footprint significantly, not to mention bring costs down for you in the future!

Artificial Grass - Green Space

It’s Safer

There are many reasons why an artificial lawn is safer than a natural lawn. One of these reasons (and perhaps the biggest for ouranimal-loving customers) is that your dog, or pet, is less likely to pick up diseases such as the potentially fatal lungworm – or even ticks or fleas – from an artificial lawn.

On a human level, artificial lawns are much safer because they do not get muddy during periods of heavy rain, which greatly minimises the risk of any trips or slips, particularly in elderly individuals. Maintenance is also safe and easy, eliminating the need to use tools like strimmers or lawn mowers, which can be hazardous if not used correctly.

More You Time

New Lawn artificial grass are low maintenance, which means you can spend more time doing things that make you happy. Whether that be relaxing with a good book, or tending to the other plants in your garden, an artificial lawn gives you the time and space to have some much needed ‘me time’.

How To Stop Weeds Growing On Artificial Grass

By Blog

An artificial lawn is a fantastic alternative to a natural one. One of the biggest reasons why our customers choose to invest in our artificial lawns is because they look stunning all year round and need very little maintenance. Natural lawns, however, require a lot of TLC. They need mowing in the growing season; feeding to prevent bare patches; not to mention even the keenest gardeners least favourite job – weeding!

You may be wondering if weeds can grow in an artificial lawn? The answer is yes, it is technically possible, however weeds that you will see growing in an artificial lawn are usually found around the edges and are known as surface weeds. Occasionally, surface weeds can sprout up because of airborne seeds or leaves that have fallen onto the grass from surrounding trees. As these weeds grow so close to the surface, all you need to do to remove them is to gently pull them out. No digging, mowing, strimming or hoeing required!

If you have had artificial grass installed and are noticing weeds growing through this would mean that weed membrane may not have been installed. This can cause a lot of issues with weeds, bulbs and other seeds growing underneath your artificial grass of which can cause lumps and bumps underfoot.

One of the biggest draws of an Artificial lawn is the fact they are more resistant to weeds than natural lawns. Newlawns are How To Stop Weeds Growing On Artificial Grassinstalled in such a way that weeds like the ones you will find in your natural lawn will not grow. To begin with, we fully excavate the area where the grass will be laid, which removes any existing surface weeds. Following this, weed killer is also sprayed onto the area and a weed resistant membrane is laid underneath, which means weeds are highly unlikely to poke through.

In order to keep your Newlawn free of weeds, we do recommend some regular maintenance to ensure it stays looking like new day in, day out. Carrying this out will reduce the number of surface weeds and keep it looking green and fresh, but even so you’ll spend considerably less time tending to your artificial lawn than your natural one – and for even better results!

Here are our top three (yes, only three!)  maintenance tips for weed prevention:

Brush Up

To remove airborne seeds (and any dirt that may have accumulated) we recommend brushing your artificial lawn with a stiff brush regularly, particularly during the summer months. This quick and easy job will keep your lawn looking perfect and stop pesky weeds from appearing. Choose a brush with synthetic bristles rather than metal ones, as these won’t damage the turf and brush firmly in the direction of the pile. This will not only remove seeds and other debris, but also keep the blades of grass looking perky and upright.

Maintain Surrounding Areas

If you have any trees or hedges overhanging your lawn, regular maintenance of these will also help to reduce weed growth. Trimming and pruning trees and hedges will stop leaves from accumulating and, in autumn, giving your lawn a once over with a leaf blower is a quick and easy way of keeping on top of this job.

Apply Weed Killer

Another method for preventing and removing weeds in your artificial lawn is to apply a pet-friendly weed killer. You needn’t do this often – once or twice per year is perfectly adequate and will keep weeds at bay all year round!

See, we told you Newlawns are low maintenance!

How do I install artificial grass if I have trees in my garden that I want to keep

By Blog

Trees are beautiful things. In summer, they provide much needed shade and, as the seasons change, there is nothing more fascinating than watching the life-cycle of a tree and the different colours they bring into our gardens.

If you have a tree in your garden, you may be wondering if it is possible to have artificial grass installed, or if an artificial lawn may be detrimental to your tree. Read on to see some frequently asked (and answered!) questions about trees and artificial grass.

Q: Will an artificial lawn kill my trees?

A: Put simply, no. Artificial grass is designed in such a way that rainwater will drain through the perforated holes. This means that your tree is guaranteed to get all the nutrients it needs, as water will penetrate under the lawn and straight to the root. In fact, the absence of natural turf will mean that your tree isn’t competing for the water and will take the lion’s share all year round!

Q: Can artificial grass be installed around an existing tree?

A: Absolutely! There are two ways of doing this and we can advise which is the best for you and your garden.

If you have a tree with very shallow roots, it may not be advisable to lay artificial grass right up to the trunk. In some cases, we recommend creating a non-grass bed, or a well, around the tree trunk. This can be made up using gravel, or mulch, and will disguise any shallow roots without smothering them. Another added bonus of doing this is it looks much neater than dusty, patchy natural turf that is often found around tree roots.

Q: Will artificial turf cause tree roots to ‘overheat’ in summer?

A: Artificial grass can get warmer than natural grass, particularly in the height of summer. That being said, this won’t have a detrimental impact upon any trees that are growing in your garden, particularly if they make their own shade.

That being said, if we do experience a hotter-than-average summer, it may be advisable to give your artificial lawn a hose down to cool it off.

Q: Can you use a rake on artificial lawn?

A: If you have trees in your garden, you most certainly will have leaves on or around your lawn, particularly in autumn. These leaves can cause surface weeds to sprout up and generally can make your garden look untidy. So what can you do about them?

For a quick and easy solution, we recommend using a leaf blower to remove leaves, however if this isn’t available, of course you can use a rake or a brush.
